What ADAS has to do with your windshield
,Many newer vehicles mount a forward-facing camera near the rearview mirror as part of driver-assist systems — lane-keeping, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and similar features. That camera looks out through the glass, which is why windshield work on these vehicles gets talked about differently than it used to.
,Repair is not the same as replacement here
,A full windshield replacement removes the glass the camera is calibrated against, which is why replacement shops often need to recalibrate the camera afterward. A chip repair is different: the original glass stays in place. We inject resin into the existing damage and cure it — the camera’s relationship to the glass is never disturbed, so recalibration is generally a replacement concern, not a repair one.
,The one thing that does matter
,If a chip happens to sit directly in the camera’s viewing area, that can be a reason to think carefully about repair versus replacement in the first place, separate from the recalibration question. We’ll flag that during the photo assessment, before anything is booked, rather than after the fact.
