The repair
What actually happens during a chip repair
Windshield glass is laminated: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. A rock chip breaks the outer layer and leaves an air pocket. Left alone, that pocket concentrates stress and spreads under vibration and temperature change.
Clean and prepare
The impact point is cleaned and any loose glass is removed so resin can reach the full extent of the break.
Vacuum the air out
A bridge and injector are sealed over the chip and the trapped air is drawn out of the damaged cavity.
Inject the resin
Optically clear resin is forced into the break under controlled pressure until it fills the legs and the impact point.
Cure and finish
The resin is UV cured, the surface is levelled flush with the glass and the repair is inspected.
Repairability
What we can repair, and what we cannot
The honest answer is that it depends on the damage. Here is roughly where the line sits, but a photo gets you a real answer rather than a generic rule.
- Bullseye, star and combination breaks within a workable size
- Chips that have not been sealed with a DIY resin kit
- Damage away from the very edge of the windshield
- Fresh damage, before dirt and moisture contaminate the break
- Long or actively spreading cracks
- Damage penetrating the inner glass layer
- Damage directly in the driver primary line of sight where a repair mark would be a distraction
- Chips inside the black frit band at the glass edge
Expectations
What the finished repair looks like
A correctly done repair restores structural integrity and stops the damage spreading. Cosmetically it usually improves the chip substantially, but a faint mark almost always remains where the impact point was. That is normal, and it is the honest trade-off against replacing the whole windshield.
We will never tell you a chip will vanish. If you want a perfect optical result, replacement is the only route, and we will tell you that rather than sell you a repair you will be unhappy with.
Scope
What Mr. Chip does not do
We are a chip repair specialist. Keeping the scope narrow is what lets us stay mobile, be fast and be straight with you about outcomes.
- Windshield replacement
- Side, door, quarter and back glass
- ADAS camera or sensor recalibration
- General auto glass or body work
If your damage needs any of the above, we will say so and you can arrange it with a replacement specialist.
Send a photo and find out where you stand
No appointment needed to get an answer. Text a clear photo of the chip and we will tell you whether it is worth repairing.
